Terms of use
Plain-language draft: to be reviewed (ideally by a lawyer) before launch.
How’s Your Pet? is a place to keep your own notes about your pet. It is not veterinary advice.
Nothing on this site replaces your veterinarian. If your pet is sick, hurt or acting unusually, contact your vet or an emergency animal hospital right away.
1. What the site is
A free tool for recording information about your pet (their details, medical history, medications and day-to-day changes) so you can show it to your vet. By using the site you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
2. Not veterinary advice
- Nothing on the site is veterinary advice, a diagnosis or a treatment plan. That includes summaries, charts, reminders, comparisons with other pets, news, product reviews and directory listings.
- We aren’t veterinarians, and the site doesn’t check whether anything you enter is normal, safe or correct.
- Never ignore your vet’s advice, or wait to get care, because of something you read or recorded here.
3. In an emergency
Call your vet or the nearest emergency animal hospital first. Don’t count on this site being available when you need it: keep your vet’s phone number in your phone, and keep important papers.
4. What you enter
- You’re responsible for what you record and for checking it’s accurate. A summary is only as good as the notes behind it, so your vet may need to confirm details with you.
- You decide who sees your pet’s information (by showing, printing, emailing or sharing a link, or adding people to your household), and you’re responsible for those choices.
- Only upload photos and documents you have the right to share.
5. Keep your own copy
We back the site up every night and work hard to keep your information safe, but we can’t promise nothing will ever be lost. Download a backup from your account page from time to time, and keep the records your vet gives you. You can upload your backup again to restore your pets if anything goes wrong.
6. No guarantees
The site is provided “as is” and “as available”, free of charge. We don’t promise that it will always be available, error-free or suitable for any particular purpose, or that it will keep any particular feature.
7. Limits on our responsibility
As far as the law allows, How’s Your Pet? and the people who run it aren’t responsible for any loss or harm that comes from using the site or not being able to use it, including your pet’s health, vet bills, decisions made using information on the site, or lost information. Some places don’t allow these limits, so some may not apply to you; nothing here takes away rights you have under consumer protection law that can’t be given up.
8. It’s free, and tips are optional
- The site is free to use: no paid plans and no in-app purchases.
- If you send a tip through PayPal, it’s a voluntary gift to help cover the cost of running the site. It doesn’t buy anything, change your account or entitle you to anything. We aren’t a registered charity, so we can’t give tax receipts. If you sent a tip by mistake, email us within 30 days. PayPal’s own terms apply to the payment.
9. Ads and other websites
The site may show ads on its public pages, and links to other websites. We don’t control those sites or ads and aren’t responsible for them; an ad or a link isn’t a recommendation.
10. Comparisons with other pets
If you choose to take part in community comparisons, the figures come from what other owners recorded. They aren’t checked by a vet and aren’t a medical standard. Your pet can be healthy and still be different from the average.
11. Your account
- Keep your password to yourself. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
- Don’t try to get into other people’s accounts or pets’ records, or to break, overload or copy the site.
- Don’t use the site (including the suggestion box) to send anything illegal, abusive or that isn’t yours to send.
- We may close an account that breaks these terms.
12. Changes
We may change the site, or these terms. If we make an important change to the terms, or decide to close the site, we’ll tell you by email first, with time to download your information.
If How’s Your Pet? (the business, the website or its domain name) is sold, merged or transferred, these terms and your account move to the new owner. We’ll tell you by email first.
13. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the laws of the province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
